NUR 1322 - Nursing I and Nursing II


22 Credits

This course is a transitional course for students who are licensed practical nurses or paramedics. The course begins with a self-study review of basic nursing care using the concepts and the nursing process. Foundational to the course is knowledge of anatomy and physiology, fundamental nursing skills, and basic math skills needed for LPN licensure or paramedic registry. Concepts of review include clinical judgment, caring, communication, culture and spirituality, tissue integrity, professionalism, infection control, safety and quality, mobility, fluid and electrolytes, elimination, gas exchange, perfusion, thermoregulation, and pain and comfort. The student will apply the concepts to basic nursing skills in caring for clients with common health problems. In transitioning to second semester concepts, students continue to use the nursing process in providing care for clients with common, well-defined health problems. Students will review concepts related to clinical judgment, safety and quality, gas exchange, fluid and electrolyte balance, and perfusion. Additional concepts of interest include acid-base, growth and development, nutrition, patient and family education, care coordination, health promotion, hormonal regulation, glucose regulation, and reproduction. Clinical areas include hospitals, clinics, and the ADN simulation lab and skills lab. 

PLACEMENT AND HOURS
This course is offered in the spring semesters of the Associate Degree Nursing Program. This is a twenty-two credit hour course. For NUR 1322, twelve credit hours come from prior learning, review and completion of skills, review of fundamental concepts from Nursing I, and a standardized test. The Nursing II portion of NUR 1322 includes 90 class hours, 30 laboratory hours, and 135 clinical hours (10 semester credit hours). No credit is given until the end of the course.

The objectives and suggested learning experiences are in NUR 1110/NUR 1210 Syllabus. Other objectives may be added periodically. All objectives should be met by the student. 


Upon completion of NUR 1322, the student will: 


*Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology, fundamental nursing concepts, fundamental nursing skills, and basic math skills.

1.    Demonstrate clinical judgment using the nursing process and evidenced based practice to provide care for 1-2 individuals of various ages with common health
problems in a variety of settings.
2.    Demonstrate increased proficiency in nursing skills learned in NUR 1110 and
performs additional skills and interventions safely according to standards of care while demonstrating knowledge of rationale.
3.    Use appropriate communication skills to effectively seek information and deliver care to individuals with common health problems.
4.    Identify learning needs and develops a teaching plan for clients to promote health and well-being across the lifespan.

5.    Use selected concepts of management and prioritization, provides safe and effective care for 1-2 clients based on identified needs.
6.    Demonstrate a pattern of responsible behavior as defined in the “Criteria for
Responsible Behavior” (AD Nursing Student Handbook).
7.    Exhibit characteristics of caring and begin to establish effective culturally sensitive relationships with clients.
